What the award means

The Sitara-e-Shujaat recognises acts of conspicuous courage. For Fizza’s family, it is the State’s formal acknowledgement of a truth they already carried: that she gave her life in the service of her country, in the courts she had chosen out of love for it.

The award was announced on Pakistan’s 75th Independence Day and conferred the following Pakistan Day. Her family received it on her behalf — a daughter of Islamabad honoured in the nation’s own house.

A very proud moment for all of us today — Pakistan Independence Day, the 75th — my late sister (Shaheed) Advocate Fizza Tariq Malik has been conferred by the President of Pakistan one of the highest civil gallantry awards, the Sitara-e-Shujaat.
